This project was done on the effect climate change has on Canada goose (Branta canadensis) migration. This project was done because of the site of geese waste on a field where there was less to none about twenty years previous. To begin collecting data for this project the materials needed are: an alchohol filled air thermometer, a string attatched to the thermometer and a GPS to locate a site to collect data. The air temperatures were taken in degrees celsius over a short grass field. Nine temperatures were collected for ten days and were then put into a graph.

Arreil - I like that you investigated something relevant to your life! Is your mother from Akron also? I'm also wondering what else might impact the goose population in Akron? Have you been able to talk to any scientists studying geese in the area?

Hello Arreil, It's an interesting question, why are there more geese now than years past. Could you tell me more about your data? I see that you took 8 or 9 air temperature measurements each day. How were the data spaced apart and were they collected at the same time each day? Did you enter your data into the GLOBE database?
Your hypothesis was as air temperature rises, the population of Canada Geese in Akron OH will rise and that as air temperature lowers so would the Canada Geese population. You write in your conclusion that your hypothesis was supported. However, I don't see any information of air temperature from when your mother was a child. Are you sure that air temperature is the reason that there are more geese in Akron?

Hi Arreil,
Thank you for sharing your research. It would be interesting to compare air temperature over a longer time span with Canadian Geese sightings. I am also interested in bird migration and last year I started participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count- you basically count and record the birds you see. Another resource you may like is a book that got me into migration. It's called, "No Way Home: The Decline of the World's Great Animal Migrations ."

Oh, wow! Great activity! Awesome investigation! I have to say, the thought of playing soccer in goose-doo could really be a health concern, something I had not thought about before with regards to climate change. Very worthwhile investigation, one that you can add more investigations to. Hope you're wearing protection from the doodies!
