Update: The GLOBE Program Live Earth Event a Huge Success!
The GLOBE Program's partnership with Live Earth, along with our support for the United Nation's World Water Day, has been a great effort on the part of thousands of students and contributors yielding great results. In the short time between World Water Day and Live Earth (21 March – 18 April) over 100 schools worldwide, representing more than 1000 students, participated in hydrology field investigations yielding over 300 data points and research reports. GLOBE Teams created and lead education and outreach efforts at premier Live Earth Events in Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Stockholm, New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Houston and Chicago, as well as contributed to the creation of Friends of Live Earth Events around the world. Combined, these teams of GLOBE students, teachers and staff reached hundreds if not thousands of race participants worldwide with our messages about water quality, pH and science learning. We are all very happy to share in your success and highlight your efforts. Visit the GLOBE Science Network on Facebook to see more pictures, stories and comments!
Thank you all for your support, enthusiasm and dedication.
GLOBE Partners with Live Earth
The GLOBE Program is now a primary educational partner of Live Earth engaged in helping to raise the profile of water quality on a global scale. Live Earth events, to be held worldwide on 18 April 2010, as well as corresponding school-based events, are a great opportunity for the GLOBE Community to focus attention on water quality and the role of science and education in better understanding our water resources. In the past, over 3 billion people have been part of Live Earth celebrations. This year join GLOBE, Live Earth, and the world in what is likely to be an unprecedented global event.
The GLOBE Program and Live Earth collaboration focuses on two primary efforts:
- We invite GLOBE teachers to add awareness building activities, water-centered inquiries, and hydrology data collection, focused on the pH protocol, to their plans in the weeks between World Water Day (22 March) and Live Earth (18 April). Links to GLOBE's Water Walk and Got Water? activities, as well as relevant hydrology protocols, are linked below.
- We encourage our community to participate in LIVE EARTH events in their area when possible, or to consider creating a "Friends of Live Earth" event in their community. These events focus on 6km walk/run to help raise awareness of water quality and availability issues worldwide.
