The GLOBE Program Team would like to thank all the teachers and students who helped make the World Water Day Event a resounding success! World Water Day is the annual U.N sponsored day dedicated to education about water issues and sustaining healthy ecosystems. This day was the focal point for a week long effort to collect and enter hydrology data, participate in direct actions to benefit the environment, and focus attention on water issues worldwide.
The data collection effort, which brought together groups from almost every continent, was just the beginning. Schools, teachers and students from around the world participated in tree plantings, stream and school-yard clean-ups, school-wide celebrations, poster and education projects, as well as inquiries and lessons about water quality and pH. The data set they created will be a valuable tool for water quality inquiries for years to come, and resulted in some interesting data particularly some surprisingly high pH readings (9-10). Discovering the reasons behind those results, as well as comparing and contracting the variety of pH and watershed data, is a process we can all enjoy and be part of.
Even though the event is wrapping up, please continue to collect and enter pH data to the database and watch the GLOBE web site for our upcoming Live Earth and Earth Day Events.
Thank you again to all the participating schools for making the world Water Day a success!
Please take a few minutes to complete this short survey so that we can better facilitate events in the future.

World Water Day, 22 March, 2010

GLOBE encourages everyone to participate in World Water Day, the annual U.N sponsored day dedicated to global education about sustaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being. World Water Day addresses the increasing water quality challenges of our planet. World Water Day occurs this year on 22 March 2010.
GLOBE is presenting a World Water Day event for which we strongly encourage your participation. The GLOBE World Water Day Event will involve collecting and entering "snapshots" of water quality/hydrology data from around the world during the week of 22-26 March, focusing primarily on pH. A secondary goal of this learning activity is to encourage teachers and students to use this data as a foundation for investigations and student research. The results of these efforts will be showcased at Live Earth events around the world in April 2010. Demonstrating our shared sense of purpose in ensuring that students become aware of the looming water crisis on a global scale is an example of the GLOBE community at its best. We strongly encourage you to become involved.
Participation in the GLOBE World Water Day event will empower GLOBE students to transform their newly acquired awareness of the growing water crisis into positive, direct actions that will benefit both people and water worldwide.
Data collection and inquiry are central to this event; we strongly encourage schools and organizations to participate in other ways, including:
- Exploration of local freshwater resources and watersheds;
- Discussion of the challenges to water quality and availability on local and global scales;
- Participation in stream clean-ups, watershed restorations or public outreach; and
- Collaboration with other groups like our partners at LIVE EARTH to multiply the efforts and impacts.
