08/30/2010  12:00 PM MDT  -  On 23 September, join the second Xpedition of GLOBE students, alumni and scientists on a GLOBE Africa and Seasons and Biomes trek to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, as they observe firsthand the shifting biomes and shrinking glaciers of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Follow the 9-day trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro online and engage with student-scientists in the field.  New features to the 2010 Xpedition website include advanced 3D Google Earth Tours of the mountain as well as daily video blogs that include updates and GLOBE protocol demonstrations. Read eyewitness accounts as Xpedition members discover the unique ecological community of Kilimanjaro and compare their findings to historical data and data from last year’s GLOBE Xpedition.

08/31/10  12:01 MDT -  Laura Altin comes from the small Estonian town of Kilingi-Nõmme.  She was first introduced to GLOBE as a shy 8-year-old, when her mother took her along to the first GLOBE teacher training in Estonia.  Now she is an Alumni leader in Estonia and a Regional Representative on the GLOBE Alumni International Advisory Committee.

09/01/10 12:00 AM MDT - American Geological Institute (AGI) is sponsoring three exciting U.S. contests for Earth Science Week 2010. Photography, visual arts, and essay contests - all focused on the theme of “Exploring Energy” - allow both students and the general public to participate in the celebration, learn about Earth science, and compete for prizes. The photography contest, open to all ages, focuses on “We Depend on Energy.” The visual arts contest, titled “Energy on Earth,” is open to students in grades K-5. Students in grades 6-9 are eligible to enter the essay contest: “How Energy Powers the Planet.”

08/31/10 11:15 AM MDT - The GLOBE Program Office is examining ways to improve the Honor Roll. We recognize that many schools are committed to maintaining a record of data entry and we know that students often appreciate the acknowledgement that comes from receiving an Honor Roll citation. We plan to continue to provide recognition for data collection and data entry; however, we would like to hear from you about ways in which we can improve the Honor Roll.
