Satellite Partnerships in 2014
2014 will be an exciting year for NASA Missions and GLOBE. Visit our Satellite Partnerships webpage to find opportunities to take part in GLOBE Campaigns related to NASA Missions. We currently have new developments to report on two of the missions:
--Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM)
The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite mission "will use multiple satellites orbiting Earth to collect rain, snow and other precipitation data worldwide every three hours." GLOBE students will also collect regular precipitation data.
The launch of the GPM satellite is currently scheduled for 1:07 pm EST on 27 February 2014, but check for updates closer to the launch date. NASA has developed a launch party "toolkit" giving activities to help you and your students connect with this mission. If you are unavailable during the actual launch, but would like to do an event after the actual launch, here is a "toolkit" for hosting a "Rain EnGAUGE Event". Please note, that while the materials can be sent internationally, there may be time limitations.

--Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP)
Planning continues for a partnership between GLOBE and NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission to take place in 2014. This mission will measure surface soil moisture using microwave and radar instruments to produce global maps of this important environmental variable. GLOBE schools can assist this mission through the collection of complementary surface soil moisture measurements using a modified version of the Gravimetric Soil Moisture Protocol. There will also be opportunities for teachers and students to interact with SMAP scientists. Stay tuned here for further details.
