11/30/2011 16:00 MST - Dr. Mekuria Argaw, member of the Science Faculty at Addis Ababa University and Country Coordinator of GLOBE in Ethiopia, recognizes the added value of GLOBE in his country's science curriculum. “Currently, we have a new education policy that requires 70 percent of higher education enrollment to be in the science fields,” writes Dr. Argaw. “This is a huge task and requires us to prepare students at the high school level with a solid science background. The standard curriculum promotes more theory than hands-on learning. GLOBE fills this gap and provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn science in a more practical manner.“
11/30/2011 10:00 MST - The next Climate and Land Cover Project Intensive Observing Period will take place from 1 – 31 January 2012. A great way to prepare for this event is to participate in the NOAA/NSTA Webinar: Exploring with Students the Connections between a Changing Land Cover and Climate. In this webinar, you will learn about the efforts climate scientists are using to improve land cover classifications for climate models. Participants will also receive an overview of what changes are occurring in global land cover and land use as well as their causes. Additionally, you will also understand how land cover relates to the global carbon cycle.
11/30/2011 10:00 MST - The second Great Global Investigation of Climate (GGIC) Intensive Observing Period (IOP) will take place 1 – 31 December 2011. Here's how it works: students will collect and enter temperature and precipitation data in the GLOBE database and investigate how to classify local weather and climate using this atmospheric data. During the first GLOBE GGIC IOP in September, 11 countries participated. If you participated in the September IOP, you are encouraged to contribute in December. 11/21/2011 16:00 MDT - Young Naturalist Awards is a research-based science competition sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History that encourages students in grades 7-12 to explore the natural world. Here’s how it works: students pose a researchable question in biology, ecology, Earth science, or astronomy and select a project based on their question. GLOBE SCRC weather and climate-based research projects make excellent investigations for this competition.
