Greetings to our GLOBE student climate scientists!
Thank you for participating in the first Great Global Investigation of Climate in the GLOBE Student Climate Research Campaign (SCRC). As you know, the SCRC is focused on helping to expand our knowledge of climate science around the world. The first step we can take as the GLOBE community is to collect data that can be used to help define the baseline climate. Each of your measurements of air temperature and precipitation help record the climate conditions for where you live. This is critically important information because climate is very local. In some areas of the world, GLOBE students who live only kilometers apart experience different climates! There is no way for the instrumentation deployed by scientists to capture this small-scale data because the weather stations are too far apart. You are a critical piece of our understanding of climate and the climate system.
In September, critical air temperature and precipitation data were collected from Cameroon, Chile, Croatia, Finland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and Alaksa, USA. In particular, the precipitation data (rain and snow reported) are very important since precipitation is more locally variable.
In preparation for December, we remind everyone to get your instruments calibrated and make sure you remember your log in and password for data entry. During the December IOP we aim to double the amount of data entered during September!
