Natural Sciences and Graphics Arts school in Rijeka (Prirodoslovna i grafička škola Rijeka), Croatia is continuing observations of the fig tree from previous campaigns.
ACTIVITY 1
The tree is located in the park in front of the school. Thing to note is it that the fig tree is quite young and overshadowed by another tree. However, the branch we are observing is facing south and is exposed to plenty of sunlight.
GPS coordinates: N 45°20'13" E 14°25'32"
Altitude: 61 m
Latin name of the tree species: Ficus carica.
This year we started observations on 1st of October 2024. We noticed during previous years that the leaves start changing colors only in November. At the start of the October all leaves were green, color 5GY 3/2.
Below is the photo of the fig tree and students.
We first noticed the change in the leaves color on 19th November. In the last 10 days leaves color changed rapidly.

We compared our data to several school north of Rijeka, both in Croatia and Slovenia. As expected, laves started changing color much earlier in the north; sometimes the difference is more than a month.
Below is the graph of leaf color change for leaf number 4 which changed the most.
We will continue with obesrvations of the color change until the tree loses its leaves.
