Провівши дослідження, учні дізнались, скільки років дереву, яке ми досліджуємо (вишні звичайній), скориставшись «Калькулятором віку дерев» - приблизно 8 років.
Виміряли окружність дерева і обчислили, скільки вуглецю зберігається в ньому – 60,5%.
Поблизу школи знайшли молоде дерево, зріле дерево, дуже старе дерево, мертве дерево і намалювали їх.
Найбільше вуглецю містить молоде дерево, яке активно росте. Воно є природним сховищем вуглецю, оскільки споживає CO2 більше, ніж виділяє. Зріле дерево все ще росте, але загальний об'єм деревини і відповідно вуглецю, що зберігається в ньому, збільшується дуже повільно.
З віком баланс СО2 дерева наближається до нуля, тому найменше вуглецю містить дуже старе дерево. А мертве взагалі більше не накопичує.
