Overview

The GLOBE Carbon Cycle Project team has developed a suite of educational activities in order to help you teach the carbon cycle to your students. In order to determine which activities are most suitable for your students' background, check out our carbon cycle flowchart below.

Important: The first flowchart shown below is only applicable to field measurements for Standard Sites (sites with homogeneous vegetation). If you want to gather your data from a school yard, city park, or any other site with non-homogeneous vegetation, be sure to use our second infographic, "Carbon Cycle Flowchart - Non-Standard Site Protocols."

Recommended Activity Bundles

We offer many different learning activities to help guide your carbon cycle lesson plan. Select one, several, or all of the Carbon Cycle activities to guide your students to a better understanding of how carbon moves through the various Earth spheres. To get started, we recommend starting with the following activities:

  • Introduction to Systems: Thinking though the Paperclip Simulation
  • Carbon Cycle Introductory Activities:
    • Carbon Cycle Adventure Story
    • The Carbon Travels Game
    • Getting to Know the Global Carbon Cycle
  • Perform experiments on local plants to better understand photosynthesis, respiration, and the role of plants in the carbon cycle
  • Collect data in a nearby field, forest, or school ground
  • Participate in carbon and biomass modeling
