Since the signing of the agreement in 1995 between the Minister of Education, the Minister of the Environment of Senegal and NOAA of the United States, followed by the training of teachers in the sub-region in 1997 by the international office of GLOBE, Senegal has actively participated in the GLOBE programme. For the period 2024-2025 marking the 30th anniversary of GLOBE, our participation in the IVSS competition focuses on the evolution of rainfall from 2004 to 2024 in two regions of Senegal: Dakar, the capital of Senegal located in the west and the Ferlo located in the north.
The rainfall data collected by the students under the supervision of the teachers and the GLOBE coordinator are reliable and in line with the characteristics of the Sahelian, dry tropical climate of Senegal, marked by a long dry season of 8 months and a short rainy season of 4 months. Under the effect of climate change, there is a late start to the rainy season in Senegal, often in July, and a fluctuation in annual rainfall.
Our research results have shown the importance of the GLOBE program through the collection of data both nationally and internationally. Data collected by students confirms the reliability of GLOBE measuring instruments.
This report describes the research questions/hypotheses, the materials and methods, and the research results followed by discussions.
With the GLOBE program, we have built a high level of intellectual human capital and a healthy environment. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of GLOBE, we have the following slogan:
Governments, Authorities, Partners, Researchers, Teachers, Parents and Students:
Let's mobilize behind the GLOBE program for sustainable development!
