Now accepting Early Career STEM Professionals into the GISN
The GISN is expanding by adding a subgroup for Early Career STEM Professionals.

This subgroup will consist of members who are upper level undergraduate or master's students pursuing a degree in a STEM field and recent graduates who are working in STEM fields but have less than five years experience. We hope that these early career STEM professionals will be a benefit to GLOBE students, teachers, and partners by establishing ties with the next generation of STEM professionals. Existing GISN members will benefit from the addition of members who have more flexibility in terms of time and finances, supply young energy to the network, and foster collaborations between students, teachers, and partners.

Opening up the GISN to Early Career STEM Professionals will empower the next generation of STEM leaders to participate in the scientific process, collaborate with successful peers, find mentors among a group of established professionals, participate in data collection and the scientific process with international schools, and further the GLOBE goal of contributing meaningfully to our understanding of the Earth system and global environment.

These new members will be found on the GISN members page but denoted with an asterisks (*) next to their name. Look for them coming to the GISN soon!

If you know of anyone who may be interested in this opportunity, please encourage them to check out the website and apply.

Call for Action: Volunteer for the IVSS

This year we will begin implementing the GISN requirement. Members must complete one GISN related activity per year.

Two ways to participate in the GISN and complete this requirement are to score projects or mentor students for the 2018 International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS).

Scoring projects will take place after all of the student projects have been submitted and can take anywhere from one hour to several hours (depending on how much time you are able to commit). Scoring can be done by STEM professionals, teachers, graduate students, GLOBE alumni, and other interested community members. You do not need a GLOBE account to score projects, so please let anyone who may be interested know about this great opportunity to help. The students really appreciate getting feedback on their projects in order to improve as researchers! There will be an informational webinar for judges on 16 March 2018 at 10:00 am MT/12:00 pm ET. Save this link to join at the time of the webinar. The webinar will also be recorded.

Mentors are STEM professionals who can assist student researchers as they complete their research. Students may have questions about a science topic or the research process in general. While signing up does not guarantee that you will be contacted, we like to have a list of available volunteers for our students. Also, please view the "Students Needing Mentors" page for mentoring opportunities.

Student projects are due on 1 March and volunteers are still needed! Fulfill your requirement early and volunteer for the 2018 IVSS!

For additional ways to fulfill your requirement, please check out the Way to Participate Page.
Unique Opportunity for US GISN Members
The Community Earth System Model (CESM) Tutorial will take place 6 - 10 August 2018 at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, CO.

The CESM Tutorial will consist of:
  • Lectures on simulating the climate system
  • Practical sessions on running CESM, modifying components, and analyzing data.
The CESM Tutorial is targeted at the graduate student level. They are accepting a maximum of 80 students with partial financial support (lodging, per diem, ground transportation) for some students. They are unable to fund airline tickets.

Application for the CESM Tutorial is now open: https://www.regonline.com/2018cesmtutorial
There is no cost associated with this application. The deadline to apply is Friday, 16 March 2018. Accepted students will be informed by 18 May 2018.

This year there will be a CESM Polar Modeling Workshop the week following the CESM Tutorial (13-17 August 2018). This workshop will be separate from the CESM Tutorial and the application process will be handled separately.  Here is the link for more information on that workshop: http://www.cesm.ucar.edu/events.workshops/2018PMWS/
