GLOBE El Niño/La Niña Experiment

During the El Niño of 1997, GLOBE students used their atmospheric measurements to track the effect of El Niño on their local weather. After El Niño, the opposite climate phenomenon, La Niña, began. Once again, GLOBE students had the opportunity to track the effects of this major climatic event and help scientists better understand this phenomenon. GLOBE Visualizations were developed to include extended La Niña/El Niño predictions and long-term monthly averages of mean air temperature and total precipitation. 

During this experiment, students and teachers were provided articles on the GLOBE Website, such as Looking for the Effects of El Niño in GLOBE Student Data, tools, such as visualizations of data and predictions, learning activities on the topic of El Niño and La Niña, as well as websites  providing information for students and teachers. Whether an El Niño or La Niña is occuring or not, these resources can provide an interesting investigation into this phenomenon.
