A journey through the clouds
Many times we take for granted the things that occur outside our window. For instance, the photo posted here is a fascinating cloud that appeared in the El Paso area in January. Social media went crazy from people all over town posting and commenting on the awesomeness of this feature. Some even mistaken them for UFO's. However, there is an explanation for this phenomena. This is an example of a lenticular cloud that occurs downwind from mountains or hilly regions. They form when winds carry moist air over mountains or hills, causing that air to condense in the atmosphere and thus creating these cloud formations. They are eye-catching, but they offer us a glimpse on how the our atmosphere works as well as give us an idea of our local our local environment.
Clouds can tell us many stories, from how the weather is for that day to how the weather will be in the near future. For educators, clouds can be tools to understand how physical concepts, such as fluid dynamics and thermodynamics, work. In this blog I will be introducing topics related to clouds and our atmosphere at least once a week throughout 2024. Everything from weather systems, the physics and chemistry of clouds and especially the impact of the April 2024 eclipse on clouds will be discussed. Together we will explore the many ways we can learn from clouds and how we can use that knowledge and experience to teach future science enthusiasts about this wonderful planet of ours.
Un viaje a través de las nubes
Muchas veces damos por sentado las cosas que suceden fuera de nuestra ventana. Por ejemplo, la foto publicada aquí es una nube fascinante que apareció en el área de El Paso en Enero.
