Students' Roadmap

Welcome to GLOBE!

To help Students navigate the GLOBE Program and website, we've created this roadmap that contains tasks commonly performed with a GLOBE student account or GLOBE Observer account.  Click on a section header to see a list of related GLOBE content, resources, and available tutorials.  The tasks are listed in the order they should be completed.

Recommended Tasks

Student Account

You have a student account if your teacher setup and provided the account to you.  Student Accounts use a system generated log-in (not a real email address) using your assigned screen name. For example: Cloudmaker01@globe.gov.

These accounts allow you to enter measurements for all GLOBE Protocols using the GLOBE Observer app or the Data Entry application on the GLOBE website.

GLOBE Observer Account

If you have your own personal email address, your teacher may have instructed you to create a GLOBE Observer account.  These accounts contain your email address in the log-in. For example: myemail@gmail.com.

This is a basic GLOBE account which gives you the ability to enter measurements for the 4 citizen science protocols using the GLOBE Observer app.

Make sure to get your school’s referral code from your teacher and register your GLOBE Observer account with your school’s referral code so your data will be added to your school, and your teacher can see your observations.

To participate in The GLOBE Program as a citizen scientist or student, download GLOBE Observer, the app of The GLOBE Program. The app is available for free in Google Play or the App Store.

You can register in the app or, if you have already created an account, use the email address and password you used to register with GLOBE to sign-in to GLOBE Observer.

The GLOBE Observer app includes four main tools: Clouds, Mosquito Habitat Mapper, Land Cover, and Trees. It also includes an Eclipse tool during eclipse events.

If you are given a student account you will also have the ability to access all of GLOBE’s protocols for your school.

In some cases you can update your screen name, update your log-in/email address, update your password.

Note: Student Accounts require permission from your teacher to access your account settings.  You may have more or less of these options depending on whether you have a student account or a GLOBE Observer account.

After you download the GLOBE Observer app, register for an account, and take the in-app training, you are ready to begin taking observations of clouds, mosquito habitats, land cover, trees, or eclipse conditions.  If you have a student account, you can also access all of GLOBE’s protocols as approved by your teacher.

Explore the tutorial to learn how to:
  • Setup data sites
  • Navigate the data entry forms
  • Use Bundles
  • View Your Observations

Your teacher should have instructed you to join your classroom’s school organization and possibly a GLOBE Team.

Your school organization page contains a map of all school data sites, a list of the sites, total observations for each site and other school information.

A GLOBE Team page displays data site locations and total observations of each team member, data site locations and total team measurements by protocol.

Links to your school and team pages can be found under the left hand menu under GoTo->My Organizations.

To join a team or school, ask your teacher for the referral code.

Use one of the 3 tools on the website to view and download your data:

  • Visualization System - Good for viewing data on a map or chart and for comparing data from multiple sites.

  • Advanced Data Access Tool (ADAT) - Good for downloading large amounts of data to a spreadsheet.

  • GLOBE API - The GLOBE API is focused on supporting developers who want to use a programmatic interface to retrieve GLOBE data.

As a student, you are encouraged to use GLOBE protocols to study issues of importance to you and share your research results.

Discover student projects from around the world with GLOBE's easy-to-use database. From studies on bacteria in the Mississippi River to microplastics in the Adriatic Sea, browse a wealth of student-conducted research to spark your next scientific inquiry.

Create and upload your student research report to the website to share your results with the world using a Student Account or a GLOBE Observer account.

See all Student Research Reports.

The International Virtual Science Symposium is an opportunity for GLOBE students to showcase their research to the rest of the community. Projects are judged by prestigious scientists across dozens of GLOBE nations. Students are eligible for stipends and GLOBE badges.

Students may submit a project on any topic, but they are encouraged to align their research with the year’s theme.
