Welcome back!
Often times we still get nervous for the first day of classes. No matter if it’s as a child walking down the intimidating halls of school or as an adult wondering if the teacher will be good and the books not so expensive, those first moments or even days of school often can be daunting. As instructors, it’s our job to engage our students and make a good first impression so we can restart the curious minds in our class. For my case, the goal is to guide my student’s learning experience using GLOBE resources to better understand the branch of science known as physics. ...

For those GLOBE educators wanting to sharpen their skills and become GLOBE trainers while sailing on a tall ship to collect water samples, then the North American Regional meeting (NARM) is for you! Participants from all parts of the country converged in San Pedro, CA to gain additional experience in GLOBE protocols, train to become trainers, and learn how to incorporate GLOBE in the classroom and outreach programs.
The key highlights were the "train the trainer" workshops on atmosphere and hydrosphere protocols, visit to the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, sailing on a Los Angeles Maritime ...

Eclipse 2024 – Part 1
Not even the clouds could pass up this momentous day, for this was were the bright and mighty sun was to be eclipsed by our closest celestial neighbor – our Moon. This event brought hundreds of excited and curious people to the El Paso Community College Solar Eclipse Extravaganza event so that they could safely witness this breathtaking moment, albeit only momentarily and partially. Not only did people witness this first hand, it was also the chance for them to participate with the NASA GLOBE program in collecting valuable cloud and temperature data. ...

The first time I have ever witnessed a solar eclipse was on March 29, 2006, in the southwestern part of Nigeria. As an undergraduate student who majored in Geography, I was curious to know how the celestial event would happen. Indeed, I was able to witness the partial solar eclipse which was an awe-inspiring celestial event, but was not opportune to study the effect of the unique phenomena on my local environment. When I read online late last year that the total solar eclipse will pass through Toledo, Ohio in the United States where I reside presently, I thought this might be a rare ...

The GLOBE Clouds team is delighted to announce this new section that showcases sky and cloud photographs from around the world! We’ve also been receiving some amazing questions from students.
The featured question was asked by students from Corpus Christi Catholic School :
Question: Why can we see clouds but not evaporation?
Answer: Water vapor is invisible. However, the water in clouds is in liquid or solid state, not gas.
Do you have a favorite cloud photo or a question for the team? Use the linked form to cast your vote and ask us any question ...

While doing a clouds protocol on the GLOBE Observer app, I notice something phenomenal in the sky. The first sun halo of 2024! These awesome atmospheric displays of light are caused by the sunlight striking the ice crystals in high level, cirrus-type clouds. These ice crystals act like prisms and refract the light to display a “rainbow ring” around the sun.
Often these sun halos forecast a change in the weather, usually stormy or in the case where I was at, very windy conditions the following day. When engaging our students in learning more about our atmosphere using the GLOBE Observer ...

The Sun drives many processes in Earth’s atmosphere. As the Sun rises and sets, it warms the Earth’s surface at different intensities. These changes in heat lead to changes in the clouds, especially the types of clouds. To study these changes, we need observations at different times over the course of hours, days, weeks, months, and years from around the globe. It can be tricky to capture the extent of these interactions with satellites alone, which is why we need observations from your perspective on the ground as part of the GLOBE Eclipse Challenge: Clouds and Our ...
