"Since my time in secondary school, I've always been captivated by science," recalls Yashraj. His fascination with emerging technologies propelled him to delve deeper into the realm of computer science, where he honed his skills in software development and data analysis. It was during his final year of engineering at the University of Pune in 2019 that Yashraj's path intersected with an initiative that would profoundly shape the trajectory of his life — The GLOBE Program. "Stumbling upon NASA's captivating citizen science projects, particularly The GLOBE Program, was a turning point for me," says Yashraj. "The program's emphasis on science, environmental awareness, and satellite technology intrigued me, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to our planet's well-being." Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Yashraj's commitment to The GLOBE Program was unwavering. Attending virtual meetings and conducting fieldwork became not just academic pursuits, but avenues for personal and professional growth.

"My experiences with The GLOBE Program have had a profound impact on shaping my interests and aspirations," reflects Yashraj. "It introduced me to the world of earth science research and environmental advocacy, sparking a shift in my priorities." Yashraj's involvement in The GLOBE Program led to groundbreaking projects, including implementing NASA GLOBE protocols to study the Himalayas and organizing events to raise awareness about environmental issues in his community. "Participating in the Himalayan Expedition marked the first-ever collection of high-altitude data using GLOBE's methodology," recalls Yashraj. "This transformative experience underscored the importance of field research and data collection in remote regions."

The impact of Yashraj's contributions has reverberated globally, earning him recognition as a Rising GLOBE Superstar and opportunities to speak at prestigious events like the UN General Assembly Science Summit. "Looking back, I would describe the overall impact of The GLOBE Program on my life and worldview as transformative and profound," says Yashraj. "It has not only shaped my career path but fundamentally changed how I perceive the world and my role within it."

His commitment to addressing pressing environmental challenges led Yashraj to apply for the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Global Diplomacy Fellowship. Through this prestigious fellowship, Yashraj underwent intensive multilateral diplomatic training and engaged in discussions on global issues, broadening his perspective and skill set beyond scientific research. "Participating in the UNITAR Global Diplomacy Fellowship was a transformative experience," reflects Yashraj. "It allowed me to explore the diplomatic aspect of science and research, providing me with invaluable insights into the role of diplomacy in addressing global challenges."

"In my role as a UN Global Diplomacy Fellow, I have the opportunity to advocate for evidence-based solutions and meaningful partnerships to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals," says Yashraj. "By integrating diplomatic engagement into my work, I aim to foster international cooperation for sustainable development and create a more resilient future for all."

An Unfinished Journey

Today, Yashraj's journey continues as he pursues advanced degrees and research opportunities in earth science, climate science, artificial intelligence, and science diplomacy. His commitment to bridging the worlds of science, education, and diplomacy serves as an inspiration to aspiring scientists and advocates worldwide. "I credit my current path to NASA's GLOBE Program, which has illuminated several aspects of Earth science study and renewed my interest in science," says Yashraj. "As a UN Global Diplomacy Fellow, I am exploring avenues to integrate science, diplomacy, and my ongoing research endeavors, forging connections between diverse fields for positive global impact."
