March 2015 GLOBE News Brief
Los Angeles! It's the site of the 19th Annual GLOBE Partner Meeting from 19-24 July. We are hoping you'll turn out to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of GLOBE with us in sunny California. The registration site is now open, and information is being updated on the Annual Meeting Webpage constantly. Don't miss this meet-up of the GLOBE world community.
To get you enthused about our GLOBE event and about a visit to Los Angeles, see this amazing video of one the city's most memorable events. In July 2012, the NASA Endeavour Space Shuttle was decommissioned after flying nearly 123 million miles and was transported through the streets of Los Angeles to its final resting place at the California Science Center where it is on display today.
See the citizens of Los Angeles come out to pay tribute to the Space Shuttle in our...

The Updated GLOBE Teacher's Guide
The last significant update of the GLOBE Teacher's Guide occurred in 2005. Since that time, members of the GLOBE Community participated in a major review of the content, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Clarifications to the protocols, based on recommendations from the NSF review committee, have been incorporated and the field guides and data sheets will better represent the new data entry tools. The five GLOBE investigations areas (Atmosphere, Earth as a System, Hydrology, Land Cover/Biology, and Soil) are becoming "Spheres" in order to be more representative of Earth system science:
- Atmosphere;
- Biosphere (a merging of the Land Cover/Biology Investigation and the phonological components of the Earth as a System Investigation);
- Hydrosphere;
- Soil (Pedosphere), and;
- Earth as a System.
Most of the images of GLOBE student data were represented in the graphs and maps from the Classic GLOBE Visualization tools; these are being replaced with those from the new Visualization tools. The revised GLOBE Teacher's Guide is being presented this week at the GLOBE North American Regional Meeting (NARM).
GLOBE International Scientist Network Webinars
The GLOBE International Scientist Network (GISN) is a global community where scientists mentor students and teachers, present scientific ideas, and/or collaborate on scientific research. Learn more by tuning in to one of the next GISN webinars.
- "Role Model Training" - 19 March, 11 a.m. MDT/ UTC-6 Hours
- "GISN Stories: 20 Years of GLOBE Research and Education Outreach" - 23 April,11 a.m. MDT/ UTC-6 Hours
Opportunity for Schools in the European Union
Fund your GLOBE school collaborations through Erasmus Plus (Erasmus+), new EU funding that replaces the former Comenius funding. This is a great opportunity for GLOBE schools willing to share their experience, plan projects and/or organize student exchanges with a partner school/ schools within the GLOBE Europe and Eurasia network. Erasmus+ is open until the year 2020. Schools can apply once a year, in March. Those who are not able to apply this March can start to find their partner schools and prepare for next year.
Opportunity for U.S. Partners
NOAA's Office of Education (OEd) will award grants designed to strengthen the public's and/or K-12 students' environmental literacy to improve community resilience to extreme weather events and environmental changes. See information about applicant eligibility and how to obtain more info through an upcoming NOAA webinar.
GLOBE Stars!
We want to share your good news with the GLOBE community, so thanks to everyone who has recently sent us a Star story. Below are some of the Stars recently posted to the GLOBE website. Others are in the queue and will be posted soon.
GLOBE wants to hear about the Stars in your community. Send your story of people, projects or activities to share on the GLOBE website. Find all the information you'll need here.

Satellite Partnerships
Shawn Goodman - NASA Project Systems Engineer - speaking about the SMAP Satellite Mission: "This is probably one of the greatest accomplishments of our lives. It's not often that you get to be part of a mission that has a global impact. As children we all imagine being able to do something that will change the world that will be somehow heroic. Being able to contribute to the strength, to the health, of the planet... somehow being able to contribute to the human race... is somehow really powerful." Get involved with the satellite missions! Scientists' Blog
Earth SySTEM is an approach to STEM Education that utilizes the current and future technological infrastructure of satellite imagery, remote sensing, and computer visualizations, and data archives in the study of Earth as a System. Besides providing pretty pictures, what else can students do with these types of satellite images, remote sensing and computer visualizations? Tune in to the GLOBE Scientists' Blog.
