North America Regional Meeting 2024: South Dakota
Location: Badlands National Park, South Dakota, USA
GLOBE's North America Regional Meeting (NARM) in May 2024 offers attendees a unique opportunity to learn from Indigenous guest speakers on the unceded treaty land of the Oceti Sakowin tribe at the Badlands National Park in South Dakota, USA. Attendees will spend two days in the field discussing how to integrate Indigenous and traditional ecological knowledge with Western science.
Registration for this event is now at capacity and has closed, but you can still add your name to a waitlist in case there are cancellations.
Agenda
There will be a Zoom session before the NARM to discuss orientation and coordination.
- Tuesday 21 May
- Arrivals, with van transportation available during the day.
- Dinner at 6 pm.
- Evening session from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., including a Native guest speaker.
- Wednesday 22 May
- Breakfast at 7:30 am.
- Morning session starts at 8 a.m.; evening session ends at 8 p.m. Topics to be covered include hydrology protocols, and a discussion group on Indigenous ways of knowing. There will also be a visit to the town of Wall and an evening activity.
- Thursday 23 May
- Breakfast at 7:30 a.m.
- Morning session starts at 8 am will include a MacroBlitz.
- NARM concludes after lunch session at 1 p.m. There will be an optional park tour and fossil hike.
- Friday 24 May
- Optional breakfast.
Transportation, Accommodations and Meals
Attendees can camp in the park, with a limited amount of camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, pad) available for those who do not have their own. There will be space for up to 15 camping attendees. There will also be accommodations available in the town of Wall, about half an hour away from the park. A van will be provided to transport those who prefer to stay in Wall.

Recommended airport: Rapid City Regional Airport
- Travel from airport to lodging/event location: Attendees who arrive during the recommended window will have van transportation. Otherwise, they will need to rent a car.
- Parking and permits: Parking is available at Sage Creek Campground in the park. Attendees will need a park entrance permit.
Attendees will be provided with dinner on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (for those who cannot depart on Thursday afternoon). They will also received breakfast and lunch on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (for those departing on Friday morning).
