Letter to the Community
May 2015
Greetings Everyone,
It's difficult to believe sometimes how quickly time passes. We are already at the end of May and events for the anniversary of GLOBE Games are in full swing in the Czech Republic, one of the first countries to join the Program, as are preparations for the 19th GLOBE Annual Partner Meeting in Los Angeles, California, from 19-24 July. I'm genuinely looking forward to learning about all these events and I hope you will be able to join us in LA.
We are only 2 months out from the meeting and so I need to remind you of some important deadlines:
3 July is the last day to register for the meeting. If you are planning to attend, why not register before then? We appreciate your early commitment as it helps everyone, our GLOBE staff, and our host organizers in Los Angeles, with planning and logistics.
1 June is the deadline to register for students (and their teachers) who will be joining the Student Research Experience - a new overnight excursion that will take place during the course of the conference week. This group of conference participants will be spending a night away from the conference hotel at one of 2 or 3 locations selected for a special student-focused field experience. Summer is tourist season in Los Angeles. In order to provide students and their teachers with the best possible experience we need to know how many to plan for and to reserve space now. So, please register as soon as possible.
1 June is also the deadline to register for the Student Research Exhibition. The 3rd Student Research Exhibition will take place during the poster session of the GLOBE Annual Partner Meeting on Monday, 20 July from 6:30 to 9:00 pm. For students who will be presenting a poster or PowerPoint during this time, please provide the following information:
- GLOBE School Name
- Presentation Title
- Presentation Abstract (short, 100-word description, in English)
- Student name(s)
- Teacher name(s)
- Indicate whether your presentation is in poster form or PowerPoint form*
*Note that students are required to use GLOBE data in their presentations.
Please provide the information on the 6 points via email to Katy Lackey (lackey@ucar.edu) by Monday, 1 June, to be considered for inclusion in the full program and to reserve presentation space (poster or table). If you cannot provide this information by 1 June, but you know that your students will be participating, please contact Katy Lackey by 1 June, to let her know when she can expect to have this information from you.
Current information about the Annual Meeting can be found on the 19th GLOBE Annual Partner Meeting webpage.
The second event I would like you to consider participating in, and to start thinking about NOW, is the 2016 GLOBE Virtual International Science Fair.
As part of GLOBE's 20th Anniversary celebration, we are asking GLOBE students to join in our largest worldwide science fair yet, open to students in all GLOBE countries. The 2016 GLOBE International Virtual Science Fair will take place online.
Students are required to use GLOBE data in their projects. They can also get help with their projects from members of the GLOBE International Scientist Network (GISN). The Virtual Science Fair is a great opportunity for your students to practice the skills they've learned, use the data they and other GLOBE students have collected and entered into the GLOBE database, and focus their research on real-world issues.
Every project that is submitted will be hosted on www.globe.gov and qualified entries will be considered to receive a stipend to defray the cost of attending the 2016 GLOBE Annual Partner Meeting.
The deadline for submission of projects is 11 March 2016. Awards will be announced on or before Earth Day, 22 April 2016. Click here for further information.
Enjoy the weekend everyone! Hope to see you in Los Angeles, in July.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tony Murphy
