Teachers: First ENSO Campaign (Phase III) Science and Research Webinar on 03 October: "Studying Water Globally and Locally”
The first Phase III GLOBE ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) Student Research Campaign science and research webinar will be held on 03 October, 8 p.m. ET (04 October, 12:00 a.m. UTC): “Studying Water Globally and Locally.”
For Phase III of the campaign, you do not need to be a GLOBE teacher; however it is free and simple to join. Phase III focuses on Earth’s water, with three simple guiding investigative questions:
- What is the quality of the water in our environment?
- What impact does water, both above and below ground, have on our environment?
- How does water in our environment impact living organisms?
During Phase III, you can be as involved as you like. There is no commitment to anything to join this effort, although we do hope to “see you” at a webinar to two and would love to include you and your students in sharing what you are doing sometime during this school year.
There will be webinars at different times to take into account schedules around the world, especially if you and your students want to present. There will be two types of webinars:
- Monthly Science and Research Webinars – These webinars will focus on our guiding questions as we learn about research currently being conducted by scientists at NASA and around the world. We will also explore a variety of both GLOBE and non-GLOBE resources that can be used to enhance students' understanding of the science behind the guiding questions. Each webinar will be an hour in length with the first 30 minutes focusing on the science and research efforts, and the second 30 minutes collaborating and sharing resources. At the end of each webinar, there will be a guided example of how to access NASA environmental data using an online resource.
- The SODA Webinars – These webinars will focus on the data collected during the SODA protocol measurement period. Several schools (teachers and students) will present their data collection and what the data has told them about “Water in Our Environment.” Each school presenting at a SODA webinar will then collaborate with another school or schools taking some of the same measurements, answering the same questions. Schools can participate in more than one SODA event during the campaign. There is no limit on data collection.
The guiding questions for the 03 October webinar are:
- SME: How do NASA satellites study Earth's water?
- Collaboration: We will focus our discussion on these questions:
1. How are you currently studying water in your environment- using both GLOBE and non-GLOBE resources?
2. What types of collaboration opportunities can you envision for this year?
3. What can we do to support them your efforts this year?
The online resource demonstration is: How to use Worldview to look at NASA EOS water-related datasets.
As the ENSO Campaign has evolved over the past few years, an amazing number of teachers, students, and scientists have provided invaluable feedback. This has enabled us to respond by trying out some new things that we think we will allow everyone to join us in some way, shape, or form. Anyone, everyone, everywhere should get involved, because we all need water!
