The GLOBE Program’s App, GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Mapper, and GLOBE’s Mosquito Protocol Bundle, Help Users Reduce Risk of Mosquito-borne Illnesses
Mosquitoes infect hundreds of millions of people around the world with diseases, such as yellow fever, malaria, dengue, and the Zika virus. These diseases have serious health impacts and kill millions of people each year. According to the World Health Organization, more than 50 percent of the world’s population is at risk of contracting a mosquito-borne illness.
By making observations and recording data using The GLOBE Program’s app, GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Mapper (MHM) tool, and the information provided in the GLOBE Mosquito Protocol Bundle, you can help contribute to reducing the risk of disease outbreaks in your community. (Important Note: GLOBE’s Mosquito Larvae Protocol has been deactivated; to enter Mosquito data, you must now use the GLOBE Observer MHM tool.)

The Mosquito Protocol Bundle
“Did you know that the olfactory system of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes is organized very differently? Aedes mosquitoes have an unconventional way of processing odors due to their multiple sensory receptors contained within a single neuron, a process known as gene coexpression (from “Non-canonical odor coding in the mosquito;” Herre, M. et al. 2022). This may help explain why mosquitoes are so adept at spotting humans to bite,” Josephine Joy Tolentino-Antalan, a member of GLOBE’s Science Working Group, said.
“Are you interested in learning more about mosquitoes and other related findings? You can visit GLOBE’s Mosquito Protocol Bundle to read relevant scientific background on mosquitoes and their environment, related International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS) projects, and other GLOBE protocols associated with this bundle.”
“Do you have any ideas on protocol bundles or would like to join a team to work on specific protocols and instruments? Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks!”
Inside the GLOBE Mosquito Protocol Bundle, you can find GLOBE protocols and datasets that will help you better understand how mosquitoes interact with the various Earth spheres. These resources can be used in conjunction with the GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Mapper tool to explore scientific questions relating to public health, as well as expanding understanding of mosquito biology and ecology.
