GLOBE students at Philippine Science High School Western Visayas in Iloilo City didn't want to wait for their weather station to arrive to start making and reporting observations. Eager to get started, they contacted scientists at the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and got permission to establish a GLOBE study site and report data using their instrumentation site until the school has its own.
Once their equipment does arrive, the students will continue reporting atmospheric measurements from both sites - allowing them to compare the data. "The personnel helped us willingly," reported GLOBE Trainer and Teacher Marvin Cadomigara. "We also borrowed a GPS unit from Central Philippine University, and they sent their technical personnel, who assisted us. We are preparing for our other measurements, too, and will soon be reporting right from school."
The Philippine Science High School hosted GLOBE's first International Training Workshop in Southeast Asia in April 1999. Over 45 educators from the Philippines, South Korea, Pakistan, and Nepal participated. Dr. Emmanuel Ramos, Deputy Director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology's Department of Science and Technology and the GLOBE Country Coordinator, praised the students and teachers of Philippine Science High School for their rapid success in implementing GLOBE.
