GLOBE Master Trainer Receives Prestigious Science Award
The GLOBE Program is pleased to recognize Dr. Mullica Jaroensutasinee, recipient of the 2005TWAS (The Academy of Science for the Developing World) Young Scientist Award in the field of Biology, presented by the National Research Council of Thailand. Dr. Jaroensutasinee is an Assistant Professor at Walailak University, Thailand, in the Institute of Science. A distinguished research scientist committed to sharing her expertise with young people in the classroom, Dr. Jaroensutasinee is also a GLOBE Master Trainer for Hydrology!
Dr. Jaroensutasinee's research interests are diverse and include animal behavior, ecology and epidemiology. She studies animal behavior in wild Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens), croaking gourami (Trichopsis vittata), and fiddler crabs (Uca vocans hesperiae). She also conducts ecological research on the association between biodiversity of fresh water fish and water properties at Khao Nan National Park. These studies will be useful for conservation and wildlife management in the future. Finally, she is interested in the effects that climate, culture, religion, and geography play on the occurrence of dengue fever-carrying mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus) in southern Thailand.
In her spare time, Dr. Jaroensutasinee is an active GLOBE trainer, mentor, and Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) for a GLOBE Thailand research project. After the 2004 Asian tsunami, she co-developed a research project for participation by schools in Thailand titled "The Effects of a Tsunami on Marine Invertebrates, Water Quality, Ecology and Atmosphere By Means of GLOBE." This research project was jointly developed with Dr. Krisanadej Jaroensutasinee of Walailak University, Dr. Martha Conklin and Dr. Sarah May of University of California at Merced; and Dr. Pornpun Waitayangkoon, of the Thailand Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology.
Through her dedication to so many environmentally relevant aspects of scientific research, Dr. Jaroensutasinee is an inspiration to GLOBE students and teachers throughout the world. We are proud to have her as a member of the GLOBE community and we wish her continued success in all her endeavors. Congratulations Dr. Jaroensutasinee!
