GLOBE Europe and Eurasia: Transboundary Collaboration for Rainfall Data Collection
Between 13 January and 7 February 2025, more than 100 schools
across Ireland, Malta, Ukraine, Slovenia, and Croatia participated in
a Rainfall and Flooding Campaign using GLOBE’s Precipitation (Rain
Depth) Protocol. The campaign was organized and run by Lydia Johnson,
GLOBE deputy country coordinator for Ireland. The program was a great
success, and students showed enthusiasm and engagement across the
countries and schools.
This citizen science campaign consisted of a month-long monitoring period where participating schools measured rainfall daily and submitted their data to the GLOBE Observer app. Participants were also offered additional activities and investigations and were encouraged to prepare projects focusing on how resilient to rainfall their school grounds are and what measures they could implement to improve this characteristic. View the brochure used to inform prospective schools of the campaign.
Another key element of this Rainfall and Flooding Campaign was a WhatsApp group containing all 105 participating schools where they could compare their data, results and experiences with the campaign. This became a really engaging, joyful, and supportive space, where as well as sharing photos and updates, educators also compared rainfall data and subsequently discussed the challenges and extreme weather risks facing their respective climates.
In an effort to capture the very GLOBE spirit of this WhatsApp group and to share the successful campaign with the GLOBE community, Johnson turned it into an ArcGIS StoryMap.
