GLOBE in Paraguay: A Journey of Science and Global Collaboration

The GLOBE Program in Paraguay exemplifies the power of education, collaboration, and community engagement in tackling global environmental challenges. By actively involving students, educators, parents, and local scientists, the GLOBE Program has deepened its understanding of the natural world and empowered educators, parents, and youth to contribute meaningfully to scientific research.

In February 2024, Elida Moreno, GLOBE Country Coordinator of Paraguay, organized and led a GLOBE training workshop for educators to introduce them to the educational resources available through the GLOBE Program. This workshop empowered 18 educators with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively integrate GLOBE into their classrooms across the country.

Following the workshop, educators were asked about the skills they learned and plan to implement. Several participants shared how they would use “the app and website to analyze and study measurements." They also learned to use the protocols for monitoring trees and mosquitoes. Several teachers were excited about having new tools for classroom implementation and employing methodological research in teaching practices.

Elida highlighted the exceptional efforts of teacher Barbara Camacho, who effectively used GLOBE resources in her classroom this past year. By incorporating the GLOBE Observer app, she has made her classes more engaging, involving both students and parents in data collection efforts.

Following the February GLOBE training, Barbara organized a meeting with parents to explain the goals of the GLOBE Program. The meeting was attended by 82 participants! Barbara then held a training session in June on how to use the GLOBE Observer app. These initiatives energized both parents and students, leading them to participate in the GLOBE Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) photography contest. Two of the students, Giannara and Dante , won first place in the primary category under Barbara’s guidance.

As GLOBE Paraguay continues to grow, their journey of science and collaboration will undoubtedly inspire future generations to engage in environmental stewardship. By bridging local actions with global impacts, GLOBE in Paraguay is enhancing scientific literacy and contributing to a more sustainable future for all.

Thank you to Elida Moreno , GLOBE Paraguay Country Coordinator and coordinator for the Benjamin Franklin Science Corner (BFSC) for this inspiring update on GLOBE activities in Paraguay. Congratulations to educator Barbara Camacho and her students on their GLOBE successes!
