On 20 April 2024, GLOBE Jordan organized a workshop attended by 40 parents of students from King Abdullah II School for Excellence in Zarqa, Jordan. The workshop aimed to train parents on the Clouds Protocol—including cloud types, density, sky color, and visibility—using the GLOBE Observer app, enabling them to become active participants alongside their children in GLOBE program activities.

The event was led by GLOBE educator Ruba Hapapkh, with the valuable A woman standing in front of a group of adults showing them how to use a GLOBE cloud identification chart.participation of GLOBE students who demonstrated the app’s functionalities and shared their experiences. One student noted: “It was exciting to teach my parents how to use the GLOBE Observer app. Now, we can explore and observe nature together as a family.”

This initiative fostered a collaborative learning environment where parents, students, and educators worked together to promote environmental awareness. By engaging parents, GLOBE Jordan strengthened the connection between home and school, ensuring that students receive support in their scientific endeavors both inside and outside the classroom. As described by teacher Hapapkh, “Engaging parents in the program ensures continuous learning and data collection beyond the classroom. It strengthens the bond between students and their families through science.”

This workshop aligns with GLOBE’s mission by expanding community involvement in citizen science. Parents’ knowledge on the use of the GLOBE Observer app increased their environmental awareness and encouraged sustained data collection efforts within families, ultimately enriching GLOBE’s global database. Parents expressed their enjoyment in taking measurements and learning about different cloud types and their impact on the atmosphere. One parent remarked, “I am grateful for this opportunity to learn about GLOBE. Now, I can assist my child in scientific research and contribute meaningful data to environmental studies.”

This event strengthened GLOBE’s outreach in Jordan, paving the way for future collaborations between schools and local communities.
