GLOBE Oman: Students Use GLOBE Protocols on Mountain Summit
A team of GLOBE Oman students embarked on an exciting challenge
this past November, choosing to summit Jebel
Shams, the highest peak in the Arabian Gulf. The trip was
organized by the General Administration of Scouts and Guides, led by
Nazira Al Harithi, former national coordinator of the Globe Program in
Oman. Thus, students joined a group of brave Omani scouts, and with
the scouts, the GLOBE students defied difficulties and challenges to
achieve their lofty goal.
With steady steps and self-confidence, the team began its arduous journey to the top. With every step, they got closer to realizing their dream and seeing the stunning views that the mountain top is famous for. Despite fatigue and exhaustion, their passion for science and discovery was their motivation to reach their goal.
Once at the top, the team didn't rest. They began applying some of GLOBE’s scientific protocols. They recorded the temperature of the summit, which is valuable information to contribute to the study of changes in our environment. They also measured some local trees using GLOBE Observer, with the aim of collecting data about the biodiversity of this unique mountainous region.
This trip was a unique experience for all participants, as they learned a lot about the environment and science and applied what they learned in practice. This experience also strengthened team spirit and cooperation between students and scouts.
At the end of the trip, the team returned to their base carrying with them unforgettable memories and valuable scientific data that will contribute to our better understanding of the environment. They have proven that young people are future leaders who can achieve great things to protect our planet.
They also received from the organizers a badge for reaching the summit, where they were able to see the famous compass point, shown in the image below.
