Oman Hosts Its First GLOBE Science Fair
The third annual GLOBE Student Gathering in Oman took place on 8 May 2014 at the Natural Park, Muscat. Two hundred students, 23 teachers, and 11 supervisors took part. The main goal of the event was to announce the winners of the first competition of science studies in Oman. The first and second place winners will be sent to India to participate in GLOBE Learning Expedition (GLE) in New Delhi from 3-8 August 2014. The gathering was an all-day-long event, and took place in an outside public park, so that the students would enjoy the land they're on and appreciate the nature surrounding them. The organizers were also trying to stress the value of conserving electricity by using less power.
The Under Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Hmood Alharthy, and the Under Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Najeeb AlRawas, as well as distinguished guests from public and private institutions in Oman were invited to participate so that they would meet the students and learning about their research. Through this very practical introduction they would come to understand the value of The GLOBE Program in Oman, and potentially create partnerships in the future.
"The event was one of the most successful GLOBE events we've had so far," according to Oman's GLOBE Country Coordinator, Ms. Nadhira Ahmed Alharthy. However, she states enthusiastically "We know the best is yet to come!" Under her direction and with the support of the Ministries and private institutions, The GLOBE Program in Oman will continue to engage students and their communities and hopes to expand the implementation of GLOBE in Oman.
