30 Years of GLOBE Campaign Logo Design Contest

Designs for the 30 Years of GLOBE Campaign were submitted by GLOBE students from around the world. These designs were intended to represent what the 30 Years of GLOBE Campaign meant to the individual and their local environment. They were to be hand drawn or digitally created without the use of AI.

The below 36 student designs met the established critera and were used as inspiration for the official 30 Years of GLOBE Campaign logo created by the GLOBE Implementation Office.

GLOBE Country and Region: Croatia, Europe & Eurasia
Description: The logo represents a complex symbolism intertwining ecological, historical, and technological motifs. The tree, at the center of the design, symbolizes the lungs of the planet, emphasizing the crucial role of nature in sustaining life. The hourglass, encompassing the past and the present, signifies the passage of time and serves as a warning about the limited time we have left to act. The upper part of the hourglass shows a slow flow of data, symbolizing ancient periods such as the time of dinosaurs and the history of Africa, the cradle of Homo Sapiens, where little data is recorded.

In the lower part of the hourglass, the flow of data accelerates, representing the modern era and underscoring the importance of Earth. Yet, hope is present in the form of a small plant, symbolizing the strength and resilience of nature. The left side of the hourglass depicts rising temperatures, while the right side shows evaporation, drought, and warming, drawing attention to climate change and its effects.

Description: Our logo uses a color palette that blends green and blue tones to represent the Earth's natural elements. We chose green because it symbolizes the land and ecosystems, while blue represents water and the atmosphere. We chose these colors to reflect the harmony and energy of the natural world, aligning with our mission at GLOBE to promote environmental stewardship.

We added a handshake at the top of the logo because it stands for global cooperation and unity, showing our commitment to fostering partnerships across different countries, cultures, and communities. The figures surrounding the globe emphasize inclusiveness, representing the global network of participants who work together toward a shared environmental goal.

The number itself has a hand-drawn, organic feel, aligning with themes of environmental care. Beneath the "30," the word "YEARS" is written in a smaller, bold font, also in green, with a slightly rugged texture, giving it a natural and earthy tone.

Description: This logo reflects our commitment to protecting the planet and understanding the environment. The globe in the center represents the unity of life on our planet, while the temperature scale symbolizes the importance of climate in maintaining the balance of nature. The carbon dioxide surrounding the globe reminds us of the challenges we face as a result of pollution. I have added animals and plants to represent the biodiversity that we promote, while soil represents the basis of life and growth. Water and wind represent the vital resources we need, while the symbol that denotes study and analysis refers to the role of science in understanding and addressing environmental issues. Through this logo, I aim to raise collective awareness of the importance of working together to protect our planet and ensure its sustainability for future generations. The logo was made in the form of the number 30, as the globe represents the number zero, indicating the passage of 30 years of GLOBE.

Description: Data Collection Methods - Past: Initially, GLOBE data was primarily collected through manual observations by students and volunteers using basic tools like rulers, thermometers, and rain gauges. Present: Today, GLOBE incorporates advanced technologies such as satellite imagery, GPS, and automated sensors, enabling more precise and extensive data collection.

The globe is inspired by the original GLOBE logo, the thermometer represents the past collecting methods while the satellite represents the advanced technology used now. The 30 is to honor the “30 Years of GLOBE Campaign.”

Description: In order to celebrate 30 years of citizen-empowered environmental science programs, the logo integrates elements familiar to GLOBE's design mentality such as colour choices and the general theme of a globe as a centerpiece. For those familiar with the Observer app, the design also showcases elements related to the protocols available in the software such as those for Hydrosphere, Atmosphere, and others in order to highlight GLOBE's data-gathering aspects.

Name: Vina V.

Description: The number "30" is used as the emblem for "30 Years of GLOBE: Comparing GLOBE Data Past and Present," with the "0" standing for time passing and a stylized Earth with a hand clock inside. The letter B in the word "GLOBE" is represented by the number "3". The woman shown holding the clock next to her, with its sparkling surface, on the other hand, represents the present by embracing time, while the man on the left side of the logo symbolizes the past because he is behind or beyond the clock. This design element, which reflects GLOBE's global reach and concentration on comparing environmental data throughout time, shows continuing work in sustainability and global research.

Name: Faith J. and Angela B.
GLOBE Country and Region: Philippines, Asia & Pacific
Description: In designing the 30 Years of GLOBE Campaign logo, we decided to incorporate the globe into the "0" of "30," symbolizing GLOBE's campaign over the past three decades. The multicolored segments of the number "3" likely represent the program's diverse focus areas, including environmental and SDGs. Lastly, the four elements surrounding the "30" represent the lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere, reflecting the program’s commitment to studying Earth’s interconnected systems.
