Arctic & Earth SIGNs

The Arctic & Earth STEM Integrating GLOBE & NASA (SIGNs) program helps people of all ages learn about climate change and Earth science through GLOBE protocols. Community members collaborate with NASA and Arctic scientists and other experts on projects that can make a difference in their local communities.

The program, based at the University of Alaska Fairbanks International Arctic Research Center, hosts in-person and virtual trainings for teachers, community members, 4-H leaders and others on climate change concepts, culturally-responsive curriculum and environment protocols. These trainings include:

  • GLOBE protocols that best fit a topic relevant to the community 
  • Traditional ecological knowledge 
  • Historical and current NASA data from NASA experts

The GLOBE Grandma training series is an especially popular set of videos by Christine Villano, an award-winning early primary science educator from Alaska.

Following training, community members and educators engage youth in designing and implementing GLOBE investigations on climate change issues that are important to their community and connect Western science with Indigenous knowledge and traditions. Scientists use the data collected through projects to address larger scale climate change or remote sensing questions.
