GLOBE Protocol Games Challenge—Global Finalists and an Honorable Mention
This year the GLOBE Program devised a challenge for the 2024 NASA International Space Apps Challenge that asked teams to create a game integrating GLOBE Program protocols or data. The idea was to create games that help players understand the world around them or learn scientific principles using GLOBE protocols or data. The teams that entered came up with some truly wonderful ideas for the GLOBE Protocol Games challenge. The NASA International Space Apps Challenge is a program that seeks to improve public engagement using openly available data supplied through NASA and its Space Agency Partners to the public.
During a Hackathon weekend (5–6 October 2024) teams came together, designed their games, wrote programs, and detailed their project ideas through videos, slides, and interactive platforms. The teams also had the opportunity to ask questions from GLOBE Program subject matter experts throughout the weekend.
We were very impressed when 411 teams from 54 countries submitted their ideas in response to the GLOBE Program challenge. Following the Hackathon weekend, subject matter experts acting as judges reviewed the descriptions of the games and assessed how well the teams integrated the GLOBE protocols and data into their efforts. The judging was done anonymously. Thirty-two of these teams were selected as Global Nominees. A group of subject matter experts from the GLOBE community then reviewed these nominees’ games to decide who would move forward to the next phase as Global Finalists.

There was no guarantee that any of the teams that submitted to the GLOBE Protocol Games challenge would become finalists as there were 943 teams that submitted projects in response to challenges from experts throughout NASA and other international space agencies.
We are very excited to announce that on 19 November, two teams that
responded to the GLOBE Protocol Games challenge were nominated as
Global Finalists: EcoNet
from Nashik, India, and EcoRangers
from Mymensingh, Bangladesh!! Congratulations to both teams for
developing informative games in response to the challenge. We also are
happy to report that another team, Quasar
from Lambayeque, Peru, received an Honorable Mention. Clicking
