Latin American and Caribbean Regional Meeting a Huge Success
On 22–24 October 2024, 31 participants from nine GLOBE countries (Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, Suriname, and Uruguay) attended the 2024 LAC Regional Meeting in Santo Domino, Dominican Republic. Presenters and facilitators included Maria Lorraine Ruiz de Alma (Country Coordinator of the host country), staff from the Ministry of Education, members of the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica, and Rusanne Lowe of the GLOBE Implementation Office.
The agenda for adult attendees included a series of presentations and a training session on mosquitoes—the main theme of the meeting. In addition to presentations from Country Coordinators about regional best practices, attendees learned more about the new Implementation Office, took part in a NASA capacity-building project, heard about different mosquito-related projects and observations, and participated in a team data-collection challenge for an ultimate prize.
Students participated in a different agenda including educational, recreational, and cultural activities oriented toward GLOBE. Students also participated in the data challenge, and their team was the winner for collecting the most data!
Meeting participants together took 2,468 GLOBE measurement!
Some activities included visits to the Cueva de las Maravillas and the Los Tres Ojos National Ecological Park, and a tour of the colonial zone to learn about the country’s history with a specialized guide. Additionally, the students presented their research projects during the meeting and later participated in a cultural exchange featuring stands from each country.
