Currently, the NASA Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) Mission Outreach Team is working with GLOBE Educator Beta-Testers measuring tree height using the GLOBE Tree Height Protocol. The NASA ICESat-2 Satellite will launch on September 12, 2018 for the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California aboard the last Delta-II rocket.
Once in space and operational, the ICESat-2 Satellite will use an on-board laser (LIDAR) altimeter system to measure the height of planet Earth. Measuring the height or elevation ice ice sheets, sea ice, tree, clouds, ocean surface, and land forms are a priority for the mission.
GLOBE students, teachers, and citizen scientists taking GLOBE Tree Height Protocol measurements will be able to work with scientists to compare their GLOBE tree height data with the tree height data from the ICESat-2 Satellite.
