LEARNING ACTIVITIES TO INTEGRATE THE GLOBE PROGRAM IN CLASSROOMS ACROSS THE LATIN AMERICA AND CARIBBEAN REGION

In 2022, the GLOBE Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean established the Academic-Pedagogical Committee for the region. This committee, composed of five community members from various countries with solid experience in implementing the GLOBE Program, undertook the task of selecting existing GLOBE learning activities that best aligned with regional interests and creating new learning activities focused on the seasons of the southern hemisphere and utilizing GLOBE data from the region. Their goal was to tailor these activities to the specific needs of the GLOBE community in the LAC Region, not to replace existing activities but to complement them. As a result of this process, 72 learning activities were created, spanning the four core spheres of the Program: Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Pedosphere, and Biosphere.
Each learning activity describes its corresponding sphere the GLOBE protocols it covers, and provides a list of associated Sustainable Development Goals. This latter aspect helps visualize how the GLOBE Program contributes to achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda. Furthermore, each activity is classified based on its exploratory, motivational, cognitive, investigative, applicative, evaluative, or communicative approach. With this diverse approach, we aim to address various dimensions of scientific learning.
We are confident that these activities will be valuable tools for teachers and inspire their students' scientific thinking development. In this regard, some of these proposals are designed to promote the exploration and understanding of data science, facilitating its interpretation and use to generate relevant information. Acknowledging the growing importance of technology in research, we have included activities exploring remote sensing tools to describe and analyze various environmental variables.
This compilation of activities represents another step towards promoting scientific education in our region, strengthening the link between learning and sustainability, and enhancing the exploration and understanding of the world around us.

ACTIVIDADES DE APRENDIZAJE PARA INTEGRAR EL PROGRAMA GLOBE EN LOS SALONES DE CLASE DE LA REGIÓN DE AMÉRICA LATINA Y EL CARIBE

En el año 2022, la Oficina Regional GLOBE de América Latina y El Caribe conformó el Comité Académico-Pedagógico de la región. Este comité, compuesto por cinco miembros de la comunidad provenientes de diversos países y con una sólida experiencia en la implementación del Programa GLOBE, asumió la tarea de seleccionar las actividades de aprendizaje GLOBE ya existentes que más se ajustaran a los intereses regionales y a crear nuevas actividades de aprendizaje enfocadas en las estaciones del año del hemisferio sur y usando datos GLOBE de la región. Su objetivo era adecuarlas a las necesidades específicas de la comunidad GLOBE en la Región LAC, no reemplazando a las existentes sino complementándolas. Como resultado de este proceso, se crearon un total de 72 actividades de aprendizaje que abarcan las cuatro esferas fundamentales del Programa: Atmósfera, Hidrósfera, Pedósfera y Biósfera.
Cada actividad de aprendizaje describe la esfera a la que pertenece, los protocolos GLOBE que cubren y además presenta una lista de los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible a los que están asociadas. Esto último ayuda a visualizar la forma en la que el Programa GLOBE contribuye al logro de los objetivos de la Agenda 2030. Además, cada actividad está identificada en función de su enfoque, ya sea exploratorio, motivacional, cognitivo, investigativo, aplicativo, evaluativo o comunicativo. Con este enfoque diverso, procuramos atender las distintas dimensiones del aprendizaje científico.
Confiamos en que estas actividades no solo serán una valiosa herramienta para los profesores, sino que también inspirarán el desarrollo del pensamiento científico en sus estudiantes. En este sentido, algunas de estas propuestas están diseñadas para fomentar la exploración y comprensión de la ciencia de los datos, facilitando su interpretación y uso para generar información de relevancia. Reconociendo la creciente importancia de la tecnología en la investigación, hemos incluido actividades que exploran el uso de herramientas de detección remota para describir y analizar diversas variables ambientales.
Este compendio de actividades representa un paso más hacia la promoción de la educación científica en nuestra región, fortaleciendo la conexión entre el aprendizaje y la sostenibilidad, y potenciando la exploración y comprensión del mundo que nos rodea.
