Join GLOBE Mission Earth Urban Heat Island Intensive Observation Period - December 2024
GLOBE Mission Earth invites educators, citizen scientists, and students all over the world to participate in the Urban Heat Island Intensive Observation Period (UHI-IOP) throughout December. You and your students can be part of this important data collection by collecting surface temperature, air temperature, and cloud observations.
GLOBE Mission Earth is planning informational webinars to help you and your students to participate and to guide students on developing UHI projects. Find the 2024-25 UHI-IOP webinar schedule (pdf).
Prior to the start of the UHI-IOP, participants will need to:
-
Become familiar with the protocols (scroll down the Atmosphere Protocol eTraining page to find the ”Surface Temperature” eTraining and “Clouds” eTraining)
-
Define your study site(s) and upload the information into the GLOBE database to be ready for data collection
-
Gather the necessary equipment (a list of equipment needed can be found below)
Equipment needed:
-
Handheld infrared thermometer (Etekcity IRTs are inexpensive and seem to work well
