Defiance, Ohio, Hosts In-Person NARM

The 2023 in-person North American Regional Meeting (NARM) in Defiance, Ohio, brought together 22 participants from several U.S. states to attend. GLOBE Partners from GLOBE Mission Earth, AEROKATS and ROVER Education Network (AREN), Toledo Zoo with Project Prairie, Xcite Learning, and My NASA Data (NASA Langley Research Center) shared their projects, resources and expertise with participants throughout the two-day event.

Participants were trained in protocols from GLOBE’s four spheres on both days. The event provided an opportunity for two participants to be observed while leading protocol sessions to become GLOBE trainers.

On the first day, participants chose to attend one of two field trips. One was to a local water treatment plant and the other was to a nature center.

Some participants were completely new to GLOBE, and others have been with the program for many years. It was a challenge to address the needs of all participants. One way this was accommodated was by breaking into groups for discussions.

Many thanks to GLOBE Educator Julie Houck for organizing this event!

Sara Feit and Bo Lebo received travel funding support from the GLOBE U.S. Coordination Office through UCAR/GLOBE Implementation Office Grant and Cooperative Agreement No. NNX17AD75A.

Report from Sara Feit:

During the NARM event in Ohio, Sara was able to become a GLOBE Trainer in Atmosphere. This included teaching and leading various educators in air temperature, surface temperature and other protocols. She found this especially valuable as these educators all had various perspectives, and there were many animated conversations about the plethora of opportunities these protocols could lead to. Being able to learn so much while teaching was truly a valuable experience!

Report from Cynthyny “Bo” Lebo:

Bo reported from her trip to the NARM event in Ohio that she appreciated the opportunity to get training in Tree Height using the GLOBE Observer app, as well as participating in other outdoor experiences (earth, water, weather, air, and water studies). She valued hearing about the impacts of Project Prairie from Mitch Magdich of the Toledo Zoo, and discussing the AREN project with Lisa Ogiemwonyi from Wayne RESA (Michigan). Bo was also thankful for the introduction and applications of the Data Literacy Cubes from Rosalba Giarratano (NASA Langley/My NASA Data). She was especially helpful to sit down with people familiar with the GLOBE website so she could sort out some clean-up of her various accounts.
