GLOBE is Adopted at Two National Estuarine Research Reserves in California
The Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, a GLOBE Partnership, has been collaborating with the San Francisco National Estuarine Research Reserve for three years. The National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) system is a partnership between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) and coastal states, and supports the interconnectedness of people and estuary ecosystems. Both reserves are part of the California Strong GLOBE collaborative group and hope to spread GLOBE throughout the NERR system.
This collaboration resulted in a shared GLOBE educator training in June 2024 at the San Francisco NERR. Matt Ferner, Reserve Manager at the San Francisco NERR, hosted the workshop and Peggy Foletta, Elkhorn Slough NERR partnership coordinator and education specialist, was lead trainer with the assistance of Nico Janik from the WestEd/UC Berkeley GLOBE Partnership, also part of the California Strong Collaborative.
Peggy Foletta reflected, “The goals of both GLOBE and the NERR system overlap so well, and with NOAA involved with both systems, it just makes sense that the two would merge.”
