North America Phenology Campaign

The North America Phenology Campaign is focused on monitoring and reporting plant phenology data to help validate the timing of the plant growing season. In this campaign, students will observe and report plant green-down and green-up, have opportunities to meet scientists, and collaborate with other students. Get Started

First Site Visit For Measuring Fall Green-Down

  1. Select your site and tag your tree(s): See the mini protocol tutorial for tips!
  2. Record notes and observations: note the species of tree and the site GPS coordinates. Write down what notice about your tree and your site: are you near a building? In the middle of the forest? Describe your tree!  
  3. Take a picture of your tree!

GLOBE eTraining

On the Biosphere eTraining page, complete the eTrainings for:

  • Introduction to Biosphere
  • Green Up-Green Down—Tree and Shrub Green-Up
  • NOTE: If you aren't a GLOBE educator, you will also need to complete the Introduction to GLOBE eTraining (scroll down the page to find the eTraining).

Measure leaf color change in the fall and budburst in the spring by following the steps in the Green-Down and Green-Up Protocols.
