GLOBE Asia and Pacific Soil in Schools Campaign Sees Remarkable Participation Across the Region

The GLOBE Asia and Pacific Regional Coordination Office launched the Soil in Schools campaign on 1 September 2024. The initiative, which will continue through 16 October 2024, engages students from across the Asia and Pacific region in hands-on activities designed to deepen their understanding of soil science and the crucial role soil plays in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Key highlights so far include:

  • Expert-Led Webinars: A series of educational webinars covering diverse topics on soil science and the GLOBE Soil Protocol have been held, with impressive participation across the region. These sessions focused on soil composition, ecosystems, temperature, and moisture, offering valuable insights to students and teachers alike.
  • Widespread Engagement: The campaign has garnered significant attention, with 134 registrations from countries and partnerships such as Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mongolia, Taiwan, and the Philippines. Resources and materials developed for the campaign are being actively shared and disseminated to all participants.

Upcoming activities include:

  • Soil Observation (12–30 September): Students will conduct soil investigations on their school premises, analyzing various factors such as composition, texture, temperature, and structure. This hands-on experience will allow students to gain practical insights into soil characteristics and their importance to ecosystems.
  • GLOBE Data Upload (18–30 September): Participants will upload their findings through the GLOBE Data Entry App or Desktop Forms. Collected data on soil temperature, moisture levels, and more will contribute to a growing body of environmental data shared globally.
  • Data Analysis (1–10 October): Students will analyze the collected data, identifying trends and differences between various locations within their school premises. Teachers and mentors will guide them through the process of interpreting the data and drawing meaningful conclusions.
  • Report Findings: Based on their data analysis, students will create engaging research projects. They will present their findings through graphs, charts, and compelling narratives aimed at promoting environmental awareness and encouraging action toward sustainability.

This campaign presents an excellent opportunity for students to develop environmental stewardship skills and gain a deeper appreciation for soil science. To learn more and participate, please visit our campaign page.
