WEBINAR | International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS): The Strengths and Possible Drawbacks of AI in Earth Systems: Leveraging Technology Ethically
Event Time: 6:00 pm UTC - 7:00 pm UTC
Location: Online
Join Dr. Maria J. Molina, Assistant Professor in the Department
of Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences at the University of Maryland,
College Park, on 8 January at 1:00 pm ET (6:00 pm UTC) for a
discussion on Ethical Science and AI.
Artificial intelligence (AI) offers numerous opportunities to enhance our understanding of the Earth’s weather and climate, enabling more accurate predictions and the identification of patterns in large datasets. However, systemic racial and social biases may inadvertently influence these advanced algorithms due to human factors present in Earth science data. This presentation will outline several projects aimed at improving our understanding and prediction of Earth systems through AI, while also addressing the ethical considerations associated with its implementation. The projects encompass various topics, including evaluating the robustness of these models in a changing climate, enhancing precipitation forecasts to better manage water resources, and analyzing shifts in sea ice patterns in polar regions.
This topic is particularly timely as students prepare their IVSS reports to submit to the 2025 IVSS. Join us for what is sure to be a fascinating discussion on ethically using generative AI in scientific research.
