Today I want to share about the amazing work by a fellow GLOBE’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task member! My friend Juan Felipe Restrepo shared with me about a special event he helped organized that showcased the great work of several female scientists! The panel “Women and Wings” took place in November 2020, as part of the VII Festival of Migratory Birds of the Colombian Caribbean. This event was coordinated and led by Colegio Montessori de Cartagena, which is also the coordinator of the festival in conjunction with Asociación Calidris and Fundación Serena del Mar. The panel’s objective was to highlight the role of women in science, especially in the field of ornithology. One of the guest speakers was Jimena Sánchez Ojeda (9th grade), who is a GLOBE student and researcher, co-author of the project Expedición BIO a dos humedales del Norte de Colombia, which obtained four stars on the GLOBE IVSS 2020. For this Project, Jimena and her fellow researchers also received three badges for their research, data science, and impact to their community. Jimena is part of the research group “Biontessori” at Colegio Montessori de Cartagena since 2018. Recently, she took part in the round tables "Talking across Generation", about the purpose of education, conducted by Instituto Mahatma Gandhi por education, peace and sustainable development of UNESCO, led at different regions of the United Nations. She also had the honor of being one of the six students that participated in the closing speech towards the end of 2020.
