SCUBAnauts International - SCUBAnauts International
SCUBAnauts International collaborates with GLOBE
The mission of SCUBAnauts International is to expand and promote opportunities for young and emerging explorers by involving them in marine sciences through underwater exploration and research activities, such as environmental and undersea conservation projects, that build character, promote active citizenship, and develop effective leadership skills.
Currently, SCUBAnauts International and GLOBE are focusing on the Ocean for Life project. In July 2009, a science initiative for multinational students will bring together a diverse group of high school students from the United States and several countries from the GLOBE Near East North Africa Region to engage in a unique educational and cultural experience focusing on the global ocean that connects us all together. Two groups consisting of 30 students each, one group conducting research in California, and the other group in Florida, will visit national marine sanctuaries and study marine life — both flourishing and at risk — in the waters off our nations coasts. This two-week learning experience will provide students with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the study of marine biology, oceanography, and the foundations of student research. Ocean for Life promises to be a rare opportunity to build the foundations of cross-cultural understanding, as students join in a common effort to examine environmental issues that, like ocean currents, move deep, know no boundaries, and affect us all. The SCUBAnauts' first GLOBE-related activity, Operation Deep Climb, involved a series of deep-sea submersible dives where SCUBAnauts will explore hydrothermal vent communities along the flanks of Mauna Kea followed by a climb along an ancient Hawaiian trail to the summit of Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain in the world, measured from more than 6,000 meters (approximately 20,000 feet) beneath the ocean to approximately 4,000 meters (13,796 feet) above sea level. This is the first of many scientific expeditions that will involve the GLOBE community as SCUBAnauts International and GLOBE work together to promote improved ocean literacy.

SCUBAnaut projects have included periodic monitoring of water quality, benthic and fish community development on mitigation structures (rock reefs) in Tampa Bay and in the adjacent Gulf of Mexico, and calibration/validation of satellite data. GLOBE's collaboration with SCUBAnauts will expand students' opportunities for research projects and connecting with other students interested in marine sciences.
