The South Dakota Discovery Center, a hands-on science center located in central South Dakota, is dedicated to empowering all Peoples of the Great Plains through hands-on experiences that inspire scientific thinking. As part of this effort, we house a statewide watershed outreach project which includes training and supporting teachers and out of school program staff in doing hands-on watershed explorations. We have also recently expanded into soil health education and will be expanding to grasslands education in the near future.
We integrate GLOBE into our Earth systems science because one of our initiatives is to connect research to classrooms and GLOBE is an authentic way to do that.
We are currently working closely with the Todd County School District on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation to develop K-5 culturally relevant curriculum. One of the outcomes of this effort is we are learning to braid Indigenous ways of knowing with Western Science.
