GLOBE Mission EARTH at the University of Toledo in the time of COVID
Professional Development
Dr. Kevin Czajkowski and Janet Struble (University of Toledo, UT) along with David Bydlowski from AREN Project, presented a session entitled NASA Resources, The GLOBE Program, and Student Research, at MSTA (Michigan Science Teacher Association) on March 7.
Due to COVID-19, Dr. C presented GLOBE to Summit County teachers via zoom attending at NASA Glenn Research Center led by Susan Kohler, NASA educational specialist, on March 12.
GLOBE Mission EARTH (GME) -UT received funding from NOAA BWET to study the Great Lakes region: Great Lakes Student Research Campaign: Engaging Students and Teachers in Authentic Watershed Studies.UT will be working with Dr. Amanda Gilbert (Defiance College), Dr. Mitch Klett (University of Northern Michigan), and Dr. Michael Jabot (SUNY-Fredonia).
GME-UT is looking at GLOBE Professional Development being all virtual. Our current model combines the GLOBE online training modules and face-to-face daily interactions for a week with teachers.

The GLOBE Midwest Student Research Symposium, Defiance College Student Research Symposium and GME SATELITES Student Conference were canceled. GME-UT is working with teachers and their students to get their research uploaded to the GME webpage.
GME-UT is promoting NASA@Home to their teachers and students.
Dr. C has asked students to post videos of the sounds of spring happening in their areas on Facebook and/or YouTube with the identifier: #DrCSpring. Here are his postings.

- March 3 - How does our water’s health related to our watershed’s health? From where is our water is coming? Dr. C looked at GLOBE hydrology data and talked about the water quality related to its watershed.Janet Struble showcased resources for teachers and students on the NOAA websites.
- March 31 - What can you do to make your water healthier? Dr. C discussed ways to improve the water quality in an area. Dru Mark-Wilson, educational director at the Defiance Soil & Water Conservation District, described her work at the DSWCD and its educational opportunities available to teachers and students. Abbie Smith, teacher from Hilltop Junior and Senior High School talked about her experience of integrating GLOBE in her junior high classroom. Meredith Wolfe, teacher from Clay High School, described her students’ stewardship opportunities and projects.
- Upcoming Webinar – What Can YOU Do to NOT Make Your Neighborhood SO HOT! Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at 8:00 pm EDT. Dr. C will review the GLOBE March data from the UHIE campaign and showcase the research being done by students. Bowling Green State University’s undergraduate students will present their research on the urban heat island effects on their campus. Matt Pearce, NASA Goddard Education Program Specialist, will introduce educators to the Climate Change Research Initiative, an opportunity for STEM educators to work directly with NASA scientists and lead research teams in a NASA research project. Elizabeth Sebastian from Fusion Academy in Brooklyn, NY, participated in the above program under the mentorship of Dr. Stuart Gaffin, Dr. Reginald Blake and Dr. Hamid Norouzi.
