Midwest U.S. GLOBE Partnership Spring Roundup
GLOBE Partnerships in the Midwest have been busy this spring! Check out some of their exciting GLOBE work below.
Opportunities for sharing student GLOBE research:
- On 23 May 2022, forty-seven students from two schools gathered at The Toledo Zoo and Aquarium in Toledo, Ohio, for the Student Research Symposium supported by GLOBE Partner Jodi Haney (image right). Highlights here!
- GLOBE Teacher Janene Smith hosted a Student Research Symposium for students at St. Peter’s School in Mansfield, Ohio on 25 April 2022. See the highlights here.
- On 11 May 2022, 60 students (Grade 3-12) participated in the Midwest Earth System Science Collaborative Virtual Science Symposium.
- IVSS Four schools associated with UT participated in the 2022 IVSS. Students from Crestwood High School (MI) were chosen in a GLOBE drawing for an invitation to the GLOBE Annual Meeting for their project: Assessing the Effects of Surface Temperature and Tree Coverage in Select Suburban Parks.
Regional Collaborations
Collaborations Across the United States with the AREN Project and GLOBE Mission EARTH: the University of Toledo GLOBE Mission EARTH team (GME-UT) is extending its work with the AEROKATS & ROVER Education Network (AREN) project for the second year.
Grand Valley State University GLOBE Partnership

Pre-service teachers at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) continue to be trained in GLOBE atmosphere protocols.

GLOBE Partner Janet Vail and Amanda Syers are incorporating GLOBE protocols into their onsite classroom presentations. Clouds, green up, and surface temperature were used for elementary school groups. GLOBE water quality protocols are used on the GVSU vessels.

Janet and Amanda will be hosting students from the Michigan Virtual High School for an event in June, where they will use GLOBE protocols.
Wayne RESA GLOBE Partnership Highlights
In May, Wayne RESA hosted the AREN Project TerraROVER training for teachers throughout the United States. The virtual training took place for three evenings. Special thanks to GLOBE Partner Kevin Czajkowski (University of Toledo) for his presentation on the Surface Temperature protocol and GLOBE Partner Angela Rizzi (NASA Langley) for her presentation on My NASA Data and the Urban Heat Island package and pacing guide.

University of Toledo’s GLOBE Mission EARTH group (GME-UT) manned booths for 5th and 6th graders at two events: the Wetlands Celebration Day event on May 13 at the Delta Reservoir in Delta, Ohio (story here!) and 2022 Lake Erie Water Festival on May 17 in Monroe, MI at Immaculate Heart of Mary Motherhouse (read more here). The University of Toledo has led the efforts of "GLOBE Kids Club", an after school enrichment program, for their second year. More here.

GME-UT will be working with Upward Bound teachers and their students this summer at the University of Toledo for the second year. The teachers will be GLOBE trained in the Urban Heat Island Effect and water quality protocols. GME-UT staff will assist with the students who will be collecting and submitting the data to GLOBE. GLOBE Mission EARTH will host two groups of students participating in the NASA SEES (STEM Enhancement in Earth Science) this summer. Read more here.

GME-UT has received funding from the Ohio Environmental Education Fund to educate local teachers and their students on environmental issues by visiting Earth Heart Farms in Oak Harbor, Ohio to study the relationship of farm runoff and the algal blooms in Lake Erie. Read the story here.
