2018 Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Student Research Symposium
The Northeast/Mid-Atlantic U.S. GLOBE Student Research Symposium took place on 4-5 May 2018 hosted by SUNY Fredonia, and in Buffalo, NY. 60 Students and 14 GLOBE teachers from MA, PA, NY, NJ, CT, NH and WV attended, with the students presenting a total of 25 GLOBE research projects in a poster presentation session. Student projects were reviewed both by their peers and by local scientists.
The event was hosted at the Adam’s Mark in Buffalo, NY. The Adam’s Mark is at the center of the “Inner Harbor” of Lake Erie and gave the students and teachers the opportunity to experience one of the Great Lakes. Attendees had a cold, but fun “Science at the Ballpark” Friday evening as a way to allow the students the opportunity to meet and greet each other. Saturday was much warmer and included a nice walk with students to the nearby Navy Park to enjoy the weather and the great views.
John McLaughlin, NOAA, gave a great welcome to the students and shared with them some opportunities that NOAA has to offer. John’s words helped set the stage for these students to see how their work can continue and the importance their work can have on helping understand the world around us and to help solve the challenges we as a society face.
While the reviewers (Betsy Ukeritis from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Susan Cox and Barbara McGuinness from the USDA Forest Service, and more) spoke with the students, teachers participated in professional development on the introductory learning activities for the GLOBE Carbon Cycle materials with the United States Country Coordinator, Jennifer Bourgeault (University of New Hampshire Leitzel Center).
Three GLOBE Partnership representatives contributed to the success of the symposium, including Larisa Schelkin, Global STEM Education Center; Elizabeth Joyner, NASA Langley, Mike Jabot (Northeast SRS lead), SUNY Fredonia, and Roller Angel from the GLOBE Implementation Office. The event would not have been possible without the help of these Partners, scientists, and the GIO Community.
