The GLOBE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Assessment is available. “I find it hard to believe it’s been two years since GLOBE invited the community to apply to become part of a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Task Force,” Rosalba Giarratano, a member of the GLOBE DEI Task Force, said in a recent blog.

“One of the most important recommendations made by the Task Force was the development and implementation of a DEI assessment survey that helped set up a baseline: we needed to become informed about the state of DEI across GLOBE, and we needed to hear from GLOBE community’s members about necessary resources to make GLOBE more diverse, equitable, and inclusive.”

“To work on the assessment survey, a special committee assembled from members among the Task Force, the newly formed GLOBE DEI Working Group and GIO staff. A first step was to define a set of terms and categories to gather information from community members as to how inclusive they believe their activities and programs are. The categories included race and ethnicity, biological sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, class and caste, physical ability, neurodiversity, religion and spirituality, verbal and nonverbal language, accent and dialect, age, and structural governance.”

“After distributing the survey in 8 languages, the committee collected and analyzed the responses. And well, an important takeaway was that while most community members are sensitive to issues related to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, there may not necessarily be a clear commitment to remove barriers for every individual to participate in GLOBE. This is precisely why there is so much work ahead both for GLOBE’s DEI working group, and for all us as members of the GLOBE community.”

“At the same time, a very encouraging finding from the survey is that many community members are looking for resources to educate themselves in DEI matters, which expresses a collective desire to continue moving towards a more inclusive GLOBE.”
