GLOBE Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE)-Surface Temperature IOP is on!
The December Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE)-Surface Temperature Intensive Observation Period (IOP) has begun! The UHIE-Surface Temperature IOP takes place in October, December, and March. IOPs involve GLOBE students, scientists, educators, and researchers collecting and entering targeted data into the GLOBE database during specific periods of time.
The December IOP will focus on looking at the impact urbanization has on the Earth’s surface temperature, and will help students take surface temperature, air temperature, and cloud observation, and engage in research projects. As always, it is vital to have GLOBE schools participate in this IOP – and engage in the hands-on scientific exploration of the impacts UHIE can have on the environment.

October IOP Wrap-Up
In a recent blog, “Urban Heat Island IOP October Wrap-Up,” Dr. Kevin Czajkowski (Dr. C., GLOBE scientist) shares a video where he discusses the October IOP, and provides a list of all of the schools participating in the IOP.
“The GLOBE October Intensive Observation Period (IOP) for urban heat island had great data collecting from around the world. Data was collected by students at over 70 schools and 1,471 observations of surface temperatures were taken,” he said. “Thank you all for taking observations and contributing to the IOP.”
