NASA and Montenegro Sign GLOBE Agreement
The Montenegro Minister of Education, Science, and Innovation and the U.S. Ambassador signed the GLOBE Agreement between the Ministry and NASA at a signing ceremony in Montenegro’s capital city of Podgorica on 11 June 2024.
U.S. Ambassador Judy Rising Reinke said, “GLOBE is a community of people passionate about teaching and learning earth science through their own research projects and those led by NASA. Members around the world collaborate with each other and use GLOBE’s extensive collection of resources to do real science. They provide environmental data that can be used to supplement NASA research efforts and further community or individual research, thereby helping people better understand the environment. I am thrilled that the Government of Montenegro has chosen to join this remarkable program.”
In her address, Minister of Education, Science, and Innovation Prof. Dr. Anđela Jakšić-Stojanović emphasized that educators play a key role in the realization of The GLOBE Program and represent a bridge between the program and the students. Educators will be trained to run the program, use GLOBE educational materials and perform GLOBE ecological measurements together with students, and exchange data with colleagues around the world.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Reinke presented a small donation of scientific equipment to high schools in Berane and Ulcinj. These donations were made possible by the GLOBE Plus Post Initiative launched in 2018 by the U.S. State Department, NASA, the GLOBE Implementation Office, and YLACES to provide enhanced support for GLOBE in host countries.
“The GLOBE Community welcomes the participation of the Montenegro Ministry of Education, Science, and Innovation in GLOBE,” said GLOBE Implementation Office Director of Community Engagement and Support Rebecca Lewis. “As we approach the 30th anniversary of The GLOBE Program, it is wonderful to see our global science and education community continue to grow.”
